Meet the Black Pearl

We are Steffi and Stu, traveling in our Black Pearl around South Africa. Our first big trip will take us from Cape Town, South Africa, to Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique. We’re excited to show you our bakkie, which we’ve named the Black Pearl. In German, when you have a big car, it’s often called a “Schlachtschiff” (battleship). Our beloved Black Pearl is pretty big and strong, and we can’t wait to share the beauty of South Africa and Mozambique with you. We’ll take you along on epic adventures like 4x4ing, diving, exploring hidden spots, fly fishing, stand-up paddleboarding on unknown rivers, and chatting with the locals. We hope to both inform you and let you enjoy the content as much as we do. Also follow us on Instagram @visualexperiences.sa Greetings, Steffi & Stu

Escaping Town

Arrived in Kleinkrantz on the 28th, late evening vibes. Spending time with my dad and his lovely Debbie made the first leg of our trip feel extra special. Between beach walks, joyful conversations, and giving the Black Pearl her final touches, we even sent the drone out for its maiden flight and captured some stunning shots. Next stop: Double Mouth, just outside the Transkei. Departure set for On Tuesday the 2nd: The adventure continues!

Double Mouth

Double Mouth in the Eastern Cape is a coastal treasure where two rivers meet the sea. Known for its wide beaches, forested dunes and the famous Bead Beach with relics from the 1608 Santo Espiritu shipwreck, it is one of the most unique spots on the Wild Coast. This reserve is home to Cape bushbuck, vervet monkeys, African fish eagles and offers hiking, camping and kayaking. For anglers, Double Mouth is legendary. From kob to bronze bream and even musselcracker, the fishing here is unmatched.

RATINGS:

Digital Nomad Life 2/5 stars: The reception is difficult and you need to make a plan with 3G if you want to stay at the camp. The small village nearby, however, has decent reception.

Campsite 2/5 stars The campsite is fine but basic. It is run by the government and a little old. Showers are hot if there is water, and the facilities are manageable once you get used to spiders and a bit of dirt. It is a fairly open camp spot, so the wind can get hectic. Booking a spot was incredibly difficult. We had to call several numbers until we finally reached someone who could help us. Insider tip: send a WhatsApp message to this number, but also follow up with a call: +27 82 452 5078. The road to the campsite is a bit tricky. It’s a dirt road through farmland, and you have to open two gates. Drive slowly and carefully, especially at night, as goats, cows and sheep often walk on the road.

Fishing 5/5 stars: Epic fishing spot with much more to explore.

Wilderness 3/5 stars: It is wild but still close enough to civilisation
